Five Mildly Interesting Facts About Me

01

I grew up in Marin County, California, in the 1990s and early 2000s

I grew up just 10 miles north of San Francisco, and with my parents both working downtown, I spent a lot of time in The City as a kid. I was a Niners fan when they were great, a Dubs fan when they were awful, and a Giants fan when the winds still swirled around the outfield at The 'Stick. My parents think I draw boxes and talk about them all day, little do they know I also draw circles and other shapes too!

02

I built my first website when I was 14-years-old

The first thing I created for the web was a Geocities site for my Half-Life and Delta Force online clans (#NerdAlert). There was demand, so I created a supply. I got a camcorder for Christmas which I used to make skate videos of my friends and me. I first started using Photoshop to make posters for my bands. When there is something I want to get done, I learn whatever I need to to make it happen.

03

I served four years in the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division

Being a soldier was the only thing I was sure I wanted to do when I was a kid. I left for basic training after graduating from high school, and after basic and Airborne School, I made it home for Xmas. I would spend the next two Xmases in Baghdad on two deployments. I am passionate about getting more veterans in tech (ask me how)! How did I go from being a paratrooper to a product designer? I'm writing a Medium series on it!

04

I live with three incredible multi-celled organisms

I currently live in SF's Marina District with my wife and our two dogs. We have our own yard (#ElDorado), so it will be hard to move. When my wife isn't busy saving the planet at work, and I'm not talking about shapes I drew, we enjoy exploring the outdoors with our two eight-year-old fur-people: Grace, a Pit/Lab, and Joe, a Shar Pei/Shiba Inu. I also enjoy powerlifting, tinkering with cars, gaming, and craft cider (generally not in combination).

05

General Assembly was an amazing experience

I never really felt challenged in school: the long lectures, lack of real-world examples, slow pace, and attitude that "it's just something you have to do in life." General Assembly changed my opinion on what education could be when I attended their User Experience Design Immersive (UXDI) course. Since graduating, I have helped multiple students in the UXDI course with portfolio and resume reviews, interview prep, and general mentorship.
